Splashing around in a brightly colored inflatable pool on a hot summer’s day is what being a kid is all about. But that fun can have a tragic turn when unsupervised. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 1996 alone, drowning claimed the lives of nearly 1,000 children under the age of 15. It is never too early to teach your children a healthy respect for water be it swimming, playing, or bathing.
Some basic tips can keep you and your children safe and happy in the water this year.

Teach your children that they should never swim alone or in unsupervised places. |

There should always be constant adult supervision of children swimming, playing, or bathing in water. |

|
|
If you are the supervising adult, give the children your undivided attention. Do not talk on the phone, read, or pursue any other distracting activity - it only takes a missed second for tragedy to occur. |

|
|
Teach children to check the water depth before entering water and to never dive into unfamiliar waters. |

|
|
Keep a telephone near the pool in case of an emergency. |

|
|
Always remove floating toys from a pool after use. Small children can be easily tempted to reach for a toy and fall into the pool. |

Do not allow children to use air-filled swimming aids if they do not know how to swim. They promote a false sense of security for both the child and parent. A puncture, underinflation, or deflation can increase the drowning risk. |

Know how to swim and allow your child to learn. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend swimming classes for children under three years of age. |
